All districts of southern Rajasthan and several from western Rajasthan including Pali, Jalore, Jodhpur and Barmer etc. Ahmedabad also attracts large number of migrant workers from UP, Bihar and within from Gujarat. |
Ahmedabad is the most rapidly growing commercial and urban hub of Gujarat. The city of over 5 million people continues to sprawl outwards. The expanding economy in Ahmedabad has fueled an increasing demand for labour, especially in the informal sector. For thisreason, Ahmedabad has amongst the largest concentrations of Rajasthani migrants in Gujarat and the presence of these migrants is in a very wide economic spectrum of the city. Some of the majoroccupations migrants work in include: hotel/restaurant, construction, factories, loading/unloading, and scrap/junk collecting. Located near the state capital, it is also well situated for state level advocacy and legislative action in support of migrant workers across the state.
The Aajeevika centre in Ahmedabad works on many of the issues faced by migrant labourers in this large urban setting. The centre has helped organise trade based collectives that look after the interests of those entering the market in their sectors. The centre actively provides registration and photo ID service to those migrants that lack any form of identity. Given the highly diversified economy of Ahmedabad city and many new opening vistas for employment, the training and placement service is a major activity of the Bureau. Legal aid and counselling is also a service provided by the Bureau for migrants that have disputes.
