Kherwara is a tehsil in Udaipur District of Southern Rajasthan and borders the Gujarat state. Like most parts of Udaipur District, the terrain is very hilly and a vast majority (70%) of the population is tribal. In the absence of information and adequate opportunities at the source, the tribal community lives in extreme poverty. There is also wide-spread unemployment among the youth in the region, though their education standards are relatively higher. These are the major triggers for migration from this area.
The work of the Bureau in Kherwara dates back to 2006, since when youth have been sourced for various skill trainings, however; the centre was officially opened in January 2010. The main agenda of the centre was to focus on the skill training programme for youth, though gradually, other services like registrations, legal aid and education etc. also picked up. The centre conducts village level campaigns for providing information and registration of migrants during those seasons where migrants will be back at the source. Camps for pre-training counseling, employment counseling, interaction with employers and direct placement are a regular feature at the centre. Skill trainings in trades like construction and house-wiring are also a very successful component of the centre’s focus on youth.
